2. Background and Aim of Development
While the average life expectancy in Japan has been increasing year by year in recent years, there has been increasing attention paid to the decline in swallowing function, such as "choking" when swallowing food, as people age. While there are many causes of "swallowing," dysphagia is one of the major causes, and in some cases it can lead to aspiration pneumonia, a serious disease. On the other hand, eating is one of life's pleasures, and maintaining swallowing function is becoming increasingly important from the perspective of quality of life.
Against this background, we have developed the "B4S™" swallowing motion monitor utilizing the C-STRETCH® elastic strain sensor. B4S™" uses a non-invasive method to visualize throat movement during swallowing, which until now could only be grasped by the swallow training practitioner, and by sharing this information with the subject, it is expected to improve motivation for swallowing training.
3. New Product Features
(1) Easy to capture throat movement
When the B4S™ is placed against the throat, the C-STRETCH® elastic strain sensor onboard captures throat movement and displays a waveform of the throat movement during swallowing on a dedicated tablet.
(2) Visualization of throat movement during swallowing
You can work on swallowing training with an awareness of throat movement.
(3) Swallowing frequency and swallowing time (time from one swallow to the next) are measured.
Data changes in swallowing frequency and time can be checked on a dedicated tablet screen.
As social needs in the field of swallowing are expected to grow, we plan to continue to introduce new products to meet these needs.
